Born and raised in Troy, Alabama, I learned to treasure barefoot afternoons, Red Flyer wagons, big red roosters, shelling peas, tent revivals, watermelon socials and so many other wonderful pieces of the American South. I always knew that country living was the only life for me and I have chosen to raise my daughter on the same hill that I grew up on. As a child, I watched my Daddy draw comical pictures of monsters, old barns and likenesses of his weird obsession - Willie Nelson. He chose to use chalk (and later paints) and the bright colors grabbed me. My big brother started drawing earlier than I and, as younger siblings often do, I wanted to do everything he did, so I picked up my pencil and never stopped. Paint-By-Numbers turned into oil portraits, pencil drawings and acrylic landscapes. People told me my work was good and I believed them. Enough said about that.
I enjoy painting the figure and have painted it now for about 9 years. I also do landscapes, buildings and still lifes.
In my "spare" time, I play guitar and sing with
Lighthouse String Ensemble, a bluegrass gospel band, and 2008 will be the band's 14th year. If you would like a CD mailed to you, just
email me.
My Addle-Brained Philosopy on ArtWhile I do think it's great that some people can look at a painting that resembles someone's lunch being rubbed all over the canvas and come to some deep psychological realization about the child within, my mind does not normally work that hard. Though I tend to over-analyze the reasons why I eat an entire bag of "Fun-sized" Snickers bars, or why I want to cry every time I hear the theme song from "Cheers" or why the sky is blue or why I didn't get calves like Jessica Alba, I rarely over-analyze art. It just is. I often paint a sweet memory or a scene from a golden time or something or someone beautiful to me, just because they need to be remembered. I like the simplicity of just painting what I like to see. My painting isn't a spiritual journey. It isn't therapy for a nutty childhood. It isn't an effort to shock the pants off the public. And because the world seems to be enamoured with "outside artists," I won't mention that I have a BS in Studio Art either. No, but I was raised by people who wore flannel shirts, listened to bluegrass music, never went to college, got married at 15, had 6 brothers and sisters, shopped at Piggly Wiggly, had our clothes hand-made, and I was spanked as a child, so that should make me just about as crazy as any outside artist you've got on your list. No?
I believe most folks would call me a "traditionalist" or a "realist" and that's fine with me.
I am always working on something artsy or craftsy. I have to or I'll die. If I could clone myself, I would probably take up acting, sewing, cake decorating, photography and interior design.
